About João Hogan

1914:  Portuguese engraver and painter, born on 4 February in Lisbon. Of Irish descent, he was the grandson of the watercolor artist Ricardo Hogan and the nephew of the painter Álvaro Navarro Hogan.


1930 to 1939 : Worked in a carpentry workshop; in the meantime, he enrolled at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa, which he abandoned after just one academic year, to continue, in 1937, his studies with Frederico Ayres and Mário Augusto at the SNBA.


1942 :  Presentation of his work publicly for the first time, at the SPN Modern Art Exhibition, Lisbon. He is represented in several collections and museums, namely at the Soares dos Reis National Museum, in Porto, at the Chiado Museum and at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's Center for Modern Art, in Lisbon. He was a founding member of the Sociedade Cooperativa de Gravadores Portugueses, in Lisbon,
where he directed several engraving courses, playing an important role in the formation of the younger generations (many of the current engravers in Portugal were his students).


1985 :  On August 24, he was awarded the rank of Officer of the Military Order of Sant'Iago da Espada.

1988 He died on June 16th.
