About Augusto Barros

1929: Born in Lisbon, Portugal

He has classes at the National Society of Fine Arts, in Lisbon, with Machado da Luz.
Like many others, before and after him, he considered emigration to be the only solution to being able to work in art and make a living from it.

1959: : After obtaining a scholarship granted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Barros leaves for Germany, where he studies and becomes a disciple of Master Hans Thiemann, from the Staadtliche Hochschule Fur Bildende Kunst School, in Hamburg.

1962:  Returns to Portugal. He is invited by Arch. Conceição e Silva to model their projects. Still this year, he is invited to participate in the 2nd Salon of Plastic Arts of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
He exhibits collectively and individually, both in Portugal and in several European countries and also in the USA.


1963:  While in Paris, he worked with Man Ray and became friends with Vieira da Silva,
her husband, Arpad Szenes, from Cargaleiro and many others.

1988:  Definitely returns to Portugal. He continues to paint and exhibits regularly,
until the end of his life, in Portugal and France.
He died in Trajouce, where he lived.
